About Us
Exploring & Preserving Quaker History Since 1903
Founded in 1903, the Friends Historical Society exists to support the study and preservation of Quaker history.
For more than a century, the Society has encouraged research, published scholarly work, and helped ensure that Quaker records and historical sources are cared for and made accessible. Through its journal, activities, and membership, the Society brings together those with an interest in the history and legacy of the Religious Society of Friends.
How We Support Quaker History
The Friends Historical Society supports the study of Quaker history in a number of ways. Through its journal, grants, and events programme, the Society encourages research, publishes new scholarship, and provides opportunities to share knowledge and engage with the history of the Religious Society of Friends.
Journal
The Journal of the Friends Historical Society is published annually and presents original research and scholarship on Quaker history. It includes articles, notes, and reviews, and welcomes contributions from both established and emerging historians.
Grants
The Society offers small research grants to support the study of Quaker history. These grants help individuals and groups with research expenses, publications, and conference participation, supporting both academic and independent researchers.
Join the Friends Historical Society
Membership of the Friends Historical Society helps sustain research, publications, and events exploring the history of the Religious Society of Friends. Members receive the Society’s annual journal and newsletter, and are invited to take part in meetings and conferences.
